We all carry stories about ourselves — narratives that shape how we understand our lives. Over time, these stories harden into what we accept as truth.
Our behaviour mirrors the story we tell about ourselves. We act the way we do because of who we believe we are.
Here's a simple example of how language shapes thought: say "clouds," "paper," "ice cream" — then quickly answer, what do cows drink? Most people say "milk." The actual answer is water. The previous words primed the wrong answer.
The same thing happens with self-talk. What you've been saying about yourself becomes your reality. Sometimes the story comes from others. Sometimes you write it yourself.
Our story shapes our weight
What's been the narrative of your weight journey?
How did the struggle begin? What messages did you take on as fact? Many people are running on lines like "I can't lose weight," "I'm big-boned," "everyone in my family is heavy," "I always gain it back," or "I have a slow metabolism."
Has that script served you? When the story is negative, the outcome tends to follow.
If you could rewrite it, what would it say instead?
Your new story
Starting today, tell a different story:
- "I can't lose weight" becomes "I'm changing my relationship with food."
- "I have a slow metabolism" becomes "My metabolism responds to how I treat it — and I'm treating it well."
- "I always gain it back" becomes "I'm building something that lasts this time."
- "I don't have the willpower" becomes "I need a plan, not willpower, to lose weight.”
